55+ Communities Near the Best Beach in Hilton Head, South Carolina

At these 55+ communities, you can catch some rays on Hilton Head Island anytime.

Hilton Head Island, South Carolina is famously known for two things—its golf courses and its pristine, white-sand beaches. Each year the area’s beaches rack up countless awards from the country’s top travel and destination magazines, including being named one of the top family-friendly beaches as well as being one of the most relaxing vacation destinations in the U.S.

With 12 miles of scenic shoreline, there are plenty of incredible places to enjoy the sun and the sand—here are three of the best:

Hilton Head Beaches

Coligny Beach is one of the area’s most visited beaches due to its convenient location near Coligny Plaza, which is full of shopping, dining, and hotel options, making it extremely easy for beach-goers to enjoy a day on the beach with everything they could need or want close by.

The beach also features several useful amenities, including numerous showers to wash the day’s sand away, shady gazebos, benches, swings, and restrooms. Grandkids will especially love running through the spouts of water shooting up from the in-ground water fountain. There’s also ample parking and easy public beach access.

Another crowd favorite—especially among locals—is Driessen Beach (also referred to as Bradley Beach) for the peace and tranquility its uncrowded shoreline offers. And, although the beach tends to be less crowded than others in the area it doesn’t lack in amenities, which include public grills, picnic tables, a playground, and a place to rent beach necessities like chairs and umbrellas during the summer months. The area is also known for its shells, making it a popular spot for beachcombers. (Metered parking is available.)

Situated only a few blocks from Driessen Beach is the popular Folly Field Beach Park, which not only offers visitors stunning seaside views but also another relaxing spot to soak up the sun without massive crowds. Beach-goers will find restrooms, showers, water fountains, soda machines, seasonal beach rentals, and lifeguards at the park. Beyond the park’s amenities, a number of restaurants are within walking distance at area resorts. (Metered parking is available in two lots.)
