La Cholla Hills is a small community of 389 attached and single-family homes for those 55+. It's a 20-minute drive north of Downtown Tucson on the edge of Oro Valley, making it a community for those who want city conveniences without actually living in the city. La Cholla Hills is surrounded by Arizona's desert landscapes with mountains on the horizon.
If you enjoy the outdoors then there are numerous parks and greenspaces within a 10-minute drive. One of Tucson's major attractions, the Tohono Chul Park, is a 10-minute drive south towards the city. This 49-acre botanical garden showcases plants from the surrounding Sonoran Desert and also has art exhibitions and a popular cafe. A 15-minute drive north takes you to the 5,493-acre Catalina State Park in the Catalina Mountains, with numerous hiking and horse-riding trails and an equestrian center.
The many attractions in the Tucson area are also within easy reach for residents of La Cholla Hills. Anyone moving to Arizona for the first time should visit the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, which is a 40-minute drive. Close to the Desert Museum is Old Tucson, which is a working movie studio combined with being an old west theme park where you can watch gunfights and go panning for gold. These include the fascinating Mini Time Machine Museum of Miniatures, the Franklin Auto Museum, the Fort Lowell Museum covering US cavalry and Native American history, the Arizona History Museum, the Arizona State Museum, and the University of Arizona Gem & Mineral Museum.
A 15-minute drive from La Cholla Hills takes you to Interstate-10, the quickest way to get to both central Tucson and to Phoenix. It's a 2-hour drive to downtown Phoenix with its major museums and other attractions, while Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is a 90-minute drive away. Tucson International Airport is a 30-minute drive.
Driving slightly further afield in Southern Arizona, Kartchner Caverns State Park with its extensive cave network is a 75-minute drive, mostly along Interstate 10, while the old west town of Tombstone is a 90-minute drive. Closer to home, the Colossal Cave Mountain Park is a 50-minute drive, and the unusual Titan Missile Museum is a 45-minute drive away, in Green Valley.
A short drive takes residents to several shopping malls. The Foothills Mall is one of the major shopping malls in north Tucson and is a 5-minute drive away. This has over 90 stores, banks, and restaurants, along with an IMAX cinema showing first-run films on 15 screens. Ten minutes away is the smaller Thornydale Village shopping mall, which has a Walgreens pharmacy and other stores.
For day-to-day grocery shopping there is a very wide choice of large stores all within a 10-minute drive, including Fry's, Trader Joe's, Albertsons, Sprouts, Safeway, Whole Food Market, Walmart, and the Arizona chain Bashas'. If you like to dine out you'll find a good range of restaurants all within a 10-to-15-minute drive of La Cholla Hills including Italian, Chinese, steakhouses, burgers, diners, Greek, Indian, Japanese, and Mexican, including a branch of Tucson's historic El Charro Mexican restaurant.
Residents who enjoy the active lifestyle will enjoy the community's amenities, which include a clubhouse, two heated outdoor pools and spas, three tennis courts, three shuffleboard courts, and courts for bocce and pickleball. Although La Cholla Hills doesn't have its own golf course, golfers will appreciate that there are several courses within a 15-minute drive, including the acclaimed Tucson National Golf Course and the Cañada Golf Course.
